Olympic fencer Shin A Lam refuses to leave the floor after unfair ruling.
Basically, the clock for the match had one second remaining and didn’t count down during that round. Her opponent score a hit, which the judges awarded her the win, even though the clock hadn’t counted down from that one second. She refused to leave the floor because if she had, it would have meant that she would de facto accept the ruling. She stayed there for 45 minutes, the first part of which she was in tears. Eventually, after her appeal of the ruling was rejected and she continued to refuse to leave, the judges had security take her off the floor.
I’d like to extend a hearty fuck you to the judges. They could easily have carried the match over into another round and had a clean victory, but no, they decided to screw over one person’s dream of a gold medal.
She did the right thing.
Seriously, this girl rules.
If you watch the video in the link, you can definitely see why it was controversial. And while I don’t know all the rules in professional fencing, I definitely sympathize with this girl.
While some people might think it wasn’t professional for her to make a stand like this during something as momentous as the Olympic games, I think it’s even more powerful and telling that she’d make a stand for herself in front of the world.
